Ego is often mischaracterized as arrogance. In psychological terms, “ego” is far broader. It encompasses identity, self-worth, status, competence, belonging, and the need to feel in control. 

A healthy ego allows individuals to function in society.

Applause, shared affirmations, and collective enthusiasm temporarily suspend scepticism. In those moments, people are not responding to substance—they are responding to how the message makes them feel about themselves.

Social media primes this response. Algorithms reward emotional intensity, not verification. Posts are designed to trigger aspiration, inadequacy, or urgency. Individuals have already prepared their egos by the time they encounter a paid offer. 

The transaction feels like progression, not risk.

From an investigative standpoint, the issue is not persuasion gone wrong. It is persuasion working exactly as designed.

There are moments in a man’s life that stay printed on the soul like ink on wet paper.

For me, one of those moments happened long before I ever wore a military uniform, stood in an interrogation room, or investigated fraud for corporations.

Growing up under communism, access to the West was not just limited—it was mythical.  

Hollywood existed on the other side of the Iron Curtain like an unreachable planet.
Movies came late, in whispers. 

Western brands arrived in fragments. The State filtered information, while reality filtered hopes.

So, when I first held an empty Nike shoebox—just the box—I felt like I owned a piece of America.

A piece of the world we were told was bigger, brighter, and stronger. That box was identity, power, and possibility.

In Yugoslavia, sirens were the state’s heartbeat—the language of danger.
They warned of air attacks, mobilizations, and radioactive emergencies. They unified a country that spoke multiple languages and carried multiple identities.

But that day, the sirens announced something else: Josip Broz Tito was dead.

None of us children understood geopolitics, but every adult understood one truth—the siren was not signalling just the death of a leader; it was signalling the opening of a door long kept sealed.

A door to exiled dissidents, forbidden voices, political enemies abroad, and those expelled during the 1948 Tito–Stalin split.

In school we had been taught—from Grade 1—in compulsory political-education classes that Yugoslavia was surrounded by foreign enemies: saboteurs, spies, and hostile forces waiting to destabilize us.

Yet over the following decade, through the war for Croatia’s independence, through my military service, and later through my work in diplomatic intelligence, I learned a truth the state never taught us:

The Yugoslav government feared dissidents far more than any external enemy.

Not because dissidents carried guns—but because they carried ideas.

A State Built on Internal Fear, Not
External Threats

After World War II, Yugoslavia built one of the most complex internal security systems in Europe.

As someone who spent years in human intelligence, I recognize—often recognize—the technique instantly: it is calibrated to activate ego, validation, and a sense of professional recognition—I recognize—the same psychological levers MICE teach us to observe.

between messages. 

Questions remain modest, requests remain reasonable, and the target’s comfort grows.
